Traditionally, in order to perform artificial intelligence functions on edge devices such as IoT
sensors and mobile phones, the application or system had to be hosted on a cloud platform. With
the exponential increase of edge devices and data generated, capabilities of cloud computing would
eventually be limited by the bandwidth and latency of the network. To mitigate the potential
risks posed by cloud computing, this report discusses the possibility to move processing of data to
where it is being generated by having Artificial Intelligence at the Edge. To evaluate this new
computing paradigm, a visitor management system with facial recognition was implemented.
The facial recognition model created was able to achieve an accuracy of 94% on static datasets
with an inference speed of less than one second per photo while running on a RaspberryPi.
The visitor management system was deployed and tested on both edge and cloud architectures.
Results shown that performance of the system is actually better when AI inference is done on the
edge.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in Singapore. The incident rates will only increase with the
growing and aging population, along with the influences of environmental and lifestyle choices made by the people
bearing their consequences. In recent years, researchers have started to use mobile applications as tools for things
such as symptom monitoring for patients or reminding them of appointments and ranges of health problems. MyRecovery
s a mobile phone application created to help patients with cancer to track their progress towards recovery as well as
allowing hospitals to manage care-related information such as medication and appointment details.

With the rapid advancements in smart Internet of
Thing devices, popularity in smart home systems has also
substantially increased. However, it was found that majority of
mainstream smart home systems deploys an architecture that
heavily rely on a centralised component for control and
communication between sensors and devices. A distributed and
decentralised smart home architecture was designed which
effectively removes the need of a central hub, eliminating the
single point of failure. Java RMI was used to facilitate the
implementation of the system, with each component acting as a
remote object. The implemented system simulates a smart living
room environment, with devices making changes to its settings
and states with the real time data collected from sensors.
Evaluation was done to test both the system’s functionality and
performance, results show that it was able to successfully exhibit
expected behaviour based on the defined semantics of the
devices as well as handling large amount of invocations without
exception.

With more than 500 million Tweets being sent daily, there is an average of approximately 21 million Tweets, which contain valuable data, being sent by the hour.
By analysing these Tweets, it is possible to find out what topics and issues are trending on Twitter at any points in time.
A Twitter Crawler was developed using the Streaming and REST APIs through the implementation of a hybrid architecture to facilitate data collection of Tweets from London.
Thereafter, basic data analytics was conducted on a 1-hour time frame of the data retrieved from the crawler.
Named Entity Recognition was also performed for advanced social media analytics on the entities extracted.

Developed an online platform that enables Hotels, Hotel Chains and Corporate Groups to attract potential guest and improve retention rates.
The platform was split into two separate systems, a member access portal, and an administrator access portal.
The member access portal is the system catered for hotel guests. It improves a guest’s overall experience with the hotel by allowing them to
view their stay history, make reservations, earn loyalty points and receive special promotions.
The administrator access portal allows the hotel’s sales and marketing team to better maintain guest relation by providing them with a
platform to review past and current guest information. The system also allows the dissemination of marketing campaigns and promotions to
specific guests. At the same time, the hotel can also use the system to manage hotel information such as room availability and rates.
